Description
The seminar builds on the course “Alien Species” from the previous term, but is not a continuation that requires participation in the winter semester. Rather, the seminar picks up where the other left of, expanding from it and raising new questions, which, like the other seminar, focus on “naturecultures” (Donna Haraway). Again, this course takes its impulse from the question of who actually decides on non/belonging (human and other species) - and how? Topics will include, for example: Nature/animal films, fallow land/urban 'wilderness', Philippe Descola's four ontologies of the relationship between humans & non-humans (naturalism, analogism, animism and totemism) vs Eduardo Viveiro de Castro's “perspectival naturalism”, as well as Luce de Lire's proposal of a “Transsexual Understanding of Nature” (thanks here to the students who brought my attention to new texts, terms and questions!). As always, we will not only work with theoretical/scientific texts, but also with prose, so-called “gray literature” and now also film & videos.
The languages of instruction are English and German, i.e. participants must be able to read texts in both languages and to participate in the seminar discussions (i.e. at least passive language comprehension in English and German)
