Film as a lie in the service of truth

Can reality be shown in film or is it all just fiction?
One of the demands of Italian neorealism was, not to invent a story that resembles reality, but to show reality as if it is a story. But what does this sentence mean for practical film work?
In my seminar, I would like to look at filmmaking between reality and fiction and focus on working with non-professional actors.
We will analyse film clips from film history and from my own films and we will create a film exercise together.
