Writing has nothing to do with signifying. It has to do with surveying, mapping, even realms that are yet to come. —Deleuze and Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus
As you begin to reflect on your practice, work and chosen topic through writing, you might ask yourself how you can incorporate the different materialities and how you can select and arrange the elements. You may want to create a situated, flexible space for the material that allows for unconventional thinking, diversity and juxtaposition. The result could be a pinboard, an assemblage or an essay. Or you may decide that, in your specific situation, a clearly structured report or well-curated documentation is the best way to communicate your approach and findings.
This course aims to support the process of writing your final thesis in the transdisciplinary field of art and science, where it is usually necessary to develop your own textual form to complement your artistic practice and choice of topic. How can art-based research be represented and enriched by the written component? Throughout the semester, we will look at the relationship between the content and form of previous Art & Science master theses, at different types of text, and at writing and design tools. The sessions will be a combination of theoretical input and group discussion. You will be given tasks to reflect and test your own practice and share your experiences in the following session. In this way, the course will help you to decide on the structure of your thesis and to write a draft of the first chapter, which we will feedback together at the end of the semester. The early start should make it easier to get into the process and keep you on track for the writing of the final thesis, which is left to everyone's own timetable. Writing should become less stressful and more of an interesting place to experiment.
