It still echoing. The ‘Festival Genialer Dilletanten’, from 1981 in Berlin. Back then, an artistic vehemence characterised by cross-genre experimentation and the use of new electronic devices was developing, particularly around art academies. Somehow, music made its way onto the canvas.

The aim of the course is to create a kind of musical structure with the available stuff. To find solutions by chance, or to arrive at a concept through improvisation, or to cover an existing piece of music with the available possibilities. Giving way to the ego, to collective authorship. The urge to do is stronger than the search for perfection. Questioning the ‘right’ and giving space to the wrong. And then confront the public with it.

The course will be roughly divided into four sections, with the main focus on the REHEARSALS, the practical work.

1. exploring the ‘skills’ of the course participants
2. exploring the possibilities (equipment)
3. REHEARSALS
4. public performance (Angewandte Festival 2025 / at Paulusplatz)

Previous musical knowledge is an advantage, also having your own instruments or other devices.

The course is divided into two, which alternate on a weekly basis.
It is therefore absolutely necessary to keep all appointments (group appointments)!

The course has a limited number of participants and is part of the site-specific art curriculum. Students from other departments will be allocated a place depending on capacity.

The Applied Festival Contribution 2025 of the Department of Site-Specific Art is fed by the course ‘Brilliant Dilettant (Impro)’.
