Wiederholungen. Künstlerische Perspektiven

Stefanie Kitzberger
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2025S, scientific seminar (SEW), 2.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S05208

Description

The seminar explores strategies of repetition in artistic practices as a critical form of knowledge production. Repetition holds the potential to uncover and disrupt everyday rituals and tacit agreements embedded within ideological, discursive, and medial frameworks. Since the 1960s, artists have employed diverse methods of appropriation, modification, reconfiguration, and deformation to interrogate and challenge the material-visual structures underpinning the social (re)production of norms and relationships. In the summer semester of 2025, we will revisit this topic with a focus on contemporary post-conceptual and post-minimalist approaches. The seminar will center on critically reflecting on issues of power and representation from an intersectional perspective through text-based discussions and collaborative analyses of artistic works, both in the seminar room and in exhibitions. Additionally, guest lectures and workshops with artists whose works will be examined in depth during the sessions are planned.

Examination Modalities

- regular attendance (absence of 2 sessions max.)
- active participation and engagement in discussions, preparation of all readings and visual analyses (en/de) (grading: 60%)
