Kitsch
Sophie-Marie Geretsegger
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2025S, Proseminar (PS), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05202
Description
Does the term kitsch have anything to do with art? Does the zeitgeist exhaust itself in play? Do pink ponies and biscuit china epitomise social criticism in the present? Does collaboration with big brand names allow anything? Is the Mona Lisa a masterpiece? Is her reproduction on coffee mugs kitsch? Or can set pieces of kitsch be combined to create new visual worlds, reconciling cultural arrogance with kitsch hatred?
Required reading: Burghart Schmidt, Kitsch und Klatsch, German/English, Vienna 1994.
