Edith Futscher
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2025S, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05199

Description

This semester, the lecture will focus on the possibilities of visual media in European art and visual culture of the early modern period. We will discuss pictorial strategies, questions of genre, the unfolding of representation, and image politics. Starting point of every single lecture will be an individual work of art that raises a specific question to be discussed in a larger historical and theoretical context. Topics of the individual lectures are likely to be: rivalry between relief, painting, sculpture and an aspired status of art and artists; the significance of perspective constructions thereby; political dimensions of art at the courts in Quattrocento; visual polemics and image controversy of the Reformation period, and the representability of so-called lower classes; a turn towards painting as action around 1600; the relationship between vision and visual media during the Counter-Reformation, and effects of colonization; silence in painting; image politics of the Jesuits; early visual reports vs. History Painting at the time of the French Revolution.
