Rooted in Politics. Pflanzen in der Gegenwartskunst

Anita Hosseini
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2025S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05197

Description

Deeply rooted in the history of colonisation and imperial power, as well as in geopolitical and territorial hegemonies, plants become carriers of information, living archives of human history that combines oppression, migration and appropriation. At the same time, however, they also function as images that are symbolically charged and, like allegories, become symbols of virtues, emotions, communities, beliefs and movements. Examples include the rose, which as sub rosa addresses discretion and community or became the embodiment of the expression of love, or the carnation, which is associated with various protest movements, or the poppy, which as a remembrance poppy is worn on the lapel as a national symbol of devotion to war veterans.

This seminar will analyse the symbolic and political charging and historical rootedness of plants on the basis of their treatment in contemporary art. Through readings and case studies, we will interrogate the presence of plants (both as actual present, blooming, growing, living entities and as pictorial representations) in contemporary art, the role they play in it, and the story they tell.
