< ADVANCED-COURSE (PART 2) >
In times of digital transformation in the artistic and creative domain, there is an increasing desire and need for contemporary approaches to integrate physical, spatial and haptic qualities in one's own artistic work in a playful, low-threshold and creative way.
For this purpose, students will be taught a process- and logic-based way of thinking and working, in which robots can be seen as a neutral interface between a digital world of ideas and physical realization.
The resulting customized and unique processes and the associated artistic, formal possibilities should create added value in the creative industry.
Content:
Targets:
- Process and logic-based way of thinking and working. (Main focus on visual Programming/Grasshopper)
- Insights into robotics.
- Insights into multi-dimensional machining with industrial robots.
Tools:
Grasshopper as an intuitive digital working environment.
Visual programming interface for object-oriented programming.
Low-threshold and playful access. Structured and logic-based thinking.
Simple operations combined to complex concepts.
Robots as a neutral or versatile physical tool.
Interface between the digital planning world and the physical materialization of creative processes.
During weekly face-to-face sessions ('desk crits'), students are encouraged to develop and document their ideas and concepts digitally with the help of a Grasshopper definition.
In addition to the conception and development of an individual, personal, artistic work in digital space (Grasshopper definition), the focus is on the realization of a final, physical work sample (1:1 hand sample), realized with the help of the laboratory's own robot.
The seminar will include THREE TASKS. These three subtasks build on each other and must be passed chronologically in order to continue with the other subtasks! The third/last subtask is the final 1:1 hand sample.
In order to ensure the desired progress, attendance of at least 80% is required (immanent examination character); curiosity and interest as well as an independent way of working are essential.
The artistic work (Grasshopper definition) is to be presented on the basis of the work sample produced in the seminar (robotically produced, physical prototype = hand sample) and together form the basis for assessment.
This course is designed to target all creative professionals at Angewandte who have an interest and curiosity in digital-based physical processes.
HOWEVER, a digital way of working is a prerequisite for participation!
This course is part two of two parts and represents the ADVANCED COURSE! In other words, the BASIC INTRODUCTION COURSE must already have been attended and successfully completed!
Individual work is a prerequisite.
Participants are asked to bring their own laptops. (Based on Microsoft Windows with working Mc Neel Rhinoceros3D + Grasshopper, on native Windows laptop or emulated on Apple laptop. Grasshopper/KUKAprc only works conditionally natively on MAC, depending on the OS version, therefore WINDOWS is ESSENTIAL and a prerequisite for participation! Students without Windows cannot participate!)
The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 12 students.
In order to make the best possible use of the resources for the ARL course and to give as many students as possible the opportunity to gain an insight into creative robotics, the final decision on active participation for students registered in the BASE will be decided and defined at the beginning of the first unit, based on the ranking in the registration and attendance.
