The collaborative seminar by Jan Svenungsson and Olga Grjasnowa focuses on the combination of image and text. Students will learn about the history, different types and functions of children's and young adult literature. We will look at many examples of these works: successful and rather unsuccessful, beautiful and garish, historical and contemporary, literary works and non-fiction, products of dictatorships and wokeness, and not least the different pedagogical approaches. At the center of the seminar, however, is the production of a children's or youth book.
The seminar also revolves around the following questions: Which works count as children's and young adult literature in the first place? How did it come about and what role does it play? How does the collaboration between authors and illustrators work, how do text and image influence each other? How do children's book publishers work? And what does children's literature say about a society? What expectations are placed on future generations and what images shape us?
However, the focus of the seminar is on the students' own production of a children's or youth book. The students are to develop a dummy or a concept for this in small groups. The focus is therefore on the interplay between text and image. The jointly produced works can take a wide variety of forms - from traditional children's books to experimental works.
Regular participation is required.
