Hacking is in nowadays a common practice among post-internet artists. By subverting systems, reverse engineering, and hacking the world, while advocating for access and open-source principles, we employ a top-down methodology that uses deconstruction as a means to create art.
In line with Vilém Flusser's (1986) challenge to open the "black box," we seek to uncover what lies behind the tech industry, unravel its toxic commodity chains, and at the same time, critically engage with the potentialities of technology while acknowledging its impact in the current neoliberal market.
For the spring semester of 2025, a collaboration project with the company Ottobock (specializing in human mobility products) is planned. Students will be invited to experiment and develop prototypes for an interactive artwork that embraces hacking and positive critical strategies, utilizing high-tech sensor hardware generously provided by Ottobock. The final projects will be showcased in an exhibition during the Angewandte Fest at the Department of Digital Arts. These projects will be developed in collaboration with the course "Künstlerische Projektarbeit/Smarte Textilien" by Paul Reza Klein and Walter Lunzer.
Regular attendance, active participation and commitment in applying the contents of the lecture in an art prototype is a prerequisite for obtaining a mark. Examination: 80% attendance; 20% practical experiments/ prototype
