FASHION AND TEXTILE IV

FROM 1900 TO 2020 

Based on the realisation that fashionable silhouettes are tied to the time in which they were created, this Cycle IV teaches knowledge of fashion, textiles and development into the modern fashion system.  The focus is on the 20th and the beginning of the 21st  century, developments and trends in fashion and textile production up to the present.

On the basis of selected visual sources and other media, the cultural history of clothing as part of world and everyday culture is worked out. The following aspects are of particular interest and form focal points of the lecture:

- Basic knowledge of the history and functions of gender fashion

- Changes in the production conditions of fashion and textiles

- Conveyance of the world and human image of the time periods

- Fashion and communication; rituals, gestures and dress language

- The artist's dress, Reformkleid , Wiener Werkstätte- Fashion and / or art?

- The invention of youth in fashion
- Two world wars and the influence on fashion
- Democratization of fashion verso haute couture
- Divas, icons
- Fashion, photography and film
- Subculture, decay

- Fashion and art

- Two world wars and the influence on fashion

- Democratisation of fashion - Haute Couture

- History of the economic and distribution process, technical inventions

- Sensitisation of the ability to distinguish between fashionable, ethnic and functional clothing

Examination Modalities

Requirements

Students must take a written exam after the end of the lecture dates. There are 3 examination dates. The exam consists of open questions. The exam can also be answered in English.

Students are not required to attend the lectures, but are recommended to do so

Comments

The grade is only made up of the results of the written exam. In the event of a negative result, this can be repeated up to 3 times.

Handwritten notes and drawings are welcome during the lecture. Students are also allowed to use their laptops. There is a picture script for each lecture. Questions and comments on the topic may be asked at any time.
Basic and advanced literature should be read in addition to the lectures (literature handout no. 22 in the library).
Aims
Students will gain an overview of the history of fashion and aspects of textile history. They will be able to recognise fashionable silhouettes and classify them historically and socially. They will be able to critically assess the fashion system of the present based on their knowledge of history.
