Introduction to Artistic Strategies - Practice
Mika Maruyama
Institute of Arts and Society, Artistic Strategies
2025S, Project Work (PA), 2.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S04368
Description
In this course, the students develop ‘critical thinking’ by engaging with both art theory and art practice —whether in visual art, performance, media art, or other creative approaches— to survey the field of contemporary art. The course explores the current lexicon of art and aesthetics, and emphasizes queer feminist and decolonial perspectives. Students are encouraged to visit cultural institutions, explore self-organized initiatives, and engage with collaborative art practices throughout the course. The course is designed to introduce different methods of artistic expression and to understand the discourse of art today.
*The schedule has been changed! Our class starts on March 25.
Throughout the SS2025 semester, we will examine diverse artistic strategies, centring on writing as the foundation for various forms of artistic output, and how they can be utilized to create compelling narratives. Engaging workshops led by guest artists will provide hands-on excersize, encouraging students to experiment and expand their artistic interest and practices. As the final outcome of the semester, students will collaborate in pairs to produce a 5–10 minute time-based art (such as video, performance, poetly reading), showcasing their creative exploration and conceptual development.
We will visit two exhibitions: Kunsthalle Wien Preis 2024 (Kunsthale Wien Karlsplatz) and Silent Spills I (Kunstraum Niederoesterreich).
