2025S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03636
Description
Practices - Intervention/ Participation (Introduction) 2.0 SemStd
Location: DKT_02, 2.OG/VZA7
Dates: Wed, 10:00-12:30 am, starting on March 12, 2025
coupled course with:
Practices - Intervention / Participation II (Workshop): 1.0 SemStd.
Number of participants: max. 10 p.
In the SS 2025, the seminar and workshop will focus in particular on topics of the EU project "SPACEX - Spatial Practices in Art and Architecture for Empathetic Exchange" (https://www.spacex-rise.org/), in which the Angewandte (under the direction of Barbara Holub) is a partner. On October 24, 2025, 17:00-20:00, as one of the final events of SPACEX a "Townhall Event" will take place in the Angewandte Innovation Lab, which we will prepare during the seminar and workshop. We will discuss the performative exercises/interventions produced in WS 2024/25, and which of them/ in which form/ for what purpose should be further developed for the Townhall Event; in addition, we will develop new artistic concepts and exercises.
We are particularly interested in the following questions:
_What performative/artistic formats can we develop for the AIL in order to communicate selected results and knowledge produced by SPACEX?
_How does artistic research relate to artistic intervention?
_How do we want to shape the relationship between "authors" and audience?
The seminar and workshop are closely intertwined. The dates for the workshop are conceived as intensive phases where concepts are tried out and materials are produced. The further process will be discussed at the beginning of the semester (also depending on the backgrounds and interests of the students).
Special guest + collaborations with:
Jitka Hlaváčková (curator, GHMP/ Prague City Gallery, Prague) and Susanne Prinz (director of the Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz/ Berlin) are partners of SPACEX and will be guests in the seminar and workshop as part of their residency at the Angewandte (more information to follow).
Lucie Strecker (Angewandte Performance Lab):
The course takes place in cooperation with Lucie Strecker and her students, who will give an input on "breathing, listening, voices" on April 2 and May 14.
The course conveys and discusses key artistic positions and practices from the 1960s to the present day (from Allan Kaprow, Situationists, Suzanne Lacy to Alexandra Pirici), whose innovative interventionist and performative practices are of essential importance for current art production.
What is an artistic intervention? What does "participation" mean? What does context mean? How do artistic practices that engage in social criticism relate to "artistic autonomy"? What framework conditions determine socially engaged artistic projects and how can they intervene in social processes?
We will focus specifically on the topic of "empathetic exchange" - as a basis for preparing the SPACEX "townhall event".
In "Amor Mundi", Hannah Arendt states that there is "a difference between solidarity, which means the acceptance of differences and the welcoming of plurality, and empathy and equality, which seek to flatten and condense." (see text by Samantha Rose Hill "What does it mean to love the world? Hannah Arendt and Amor Mundi" : https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/transformation/what-does-it-mean-to-love-world-hannah-arendt-and-amor-mundi [09.07.2024].)
Examination Modalities
Active participation in the seminar and the workshop, as well as production of "materials" for the Townhall Event:

Conception and testing of performative exercises/interventions in preparation for the Townhall Event for SPACEX with performative aspects of "empathetic exchange"
_Drawings and sketches
_Preparation of elements/materials for the Townhall Event on 24.10.2025 (and participation if possible)
Documentation of the project
The skills for this are taught in the course.
Concluding discussion + presentation:
The students will show the interventions and concepts for "empathetic exchange" for the Townhall Event in the final presentation in VOZ 7.
Date of final presentation: June 13, 11 am

Comments
The course is designed for students of KKP, but open to all students - especially to exchange ideas and learn from each other in a transdisciplinary way. It takes place in cooperation with the courses of Lucie Strecker (APL). Students are invited to actively participate in the Townhall Event on Oct.24, 2025, and to exchange with the international network of SPACEX.
