2025S, Vorlesung und Übungen (VU), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03577
Artists and designers rely primarily on copyright as means to protect their intellectual property (IP). However, there are further IP rights such as registered designs, trademarks and patents. Not only participants of industrial design but also creative people in general regularly use these rights although to have them, they have to be applied for before an office, they may be attacked by third parties and they are expensive.
On the other side, projects and art sessions may infringe other peoples IP rights. The seminar shall give an overview on registered designs, trademarks and patents in order to gain an ability to estimate whether someone’s ideas are worth/require protection and whether a project may collide with IP rights of others. Moreover, the seminar gives basic abilities to do a search of patents, designs and trademarks for evaluating purposes.
We will discuss many examples of the world of arts, e.g., Bansky, Lego, Apple (music publishing vs. IT giant), Thonet furniture, Anish Kapoor, Band Easy Life vs Company Easy Jet, Philippe Starck and many more.
The seminar closes with an examination talk for each student in order to achieve a successful participation.
Application to the seminar shall be conducted via base. Even if no successful participation is intended - everyone is welcome.
