Description

city of bits

an expedition into what makes a city

Our cities are complex systems that interconnect all our social, economic, cultural, and infrastructural elements. Within these large systems, we then build own smaller networks – trying to make the city work for us. A good city allows the interdependency of those smaller and bigger systems to be a space of mutual benefit, a place for our well-being, creativity, health, and progress. Yet, the multifaceted challenges of our time make our cities also become increasingly demanding places – serving many functions that can diametrically differ in size and nature.

What is it, then, that makes a good city? How are we part of its dynamics?

While too complex to fully comprehend a city, we can get to know its fragments, its bits, each at a time: decoding the growing complexity of our shared spaces amid the rapid changes we are facing, both on a local and global scale.

city of bits is a journey to the very notion of our shared urban networks, to both the visible and hidden aspects: from basic infrastructures to our own individual networks; from large-scale institutions to neighborhood encounter points; from mainstream narratives to our individual poetry – must the city work before we can make the city work for us? Can we transform its way of working through our view, care, engagement? And what are methods of critical spatial practice to do so?

During the seminar we put ourselves in conversation with our city, critically contrasting our poetry with the urban narratives, and our own role amid the urgent contemporary arguments and the significance of our shared spaces in mediating them. We’ll reflect and apply spatial practices, try to engage with our public spaces, urban commons, we'll look at the fringes, where city meets countryside, at digitalized urban infrastructures, and, particularly, at how architecture and urban spaces affect our encounters in urban space.
