INVESTIGATIONS ON THE GAZE
The cinematic recording possibilities, such as perspective, the camera positions and -movement, slow motion or real time, editing, etc. have an influence on the impression when viewing. In this seminar, we analyze who looks at whom and how in classical film examples, and who is addressed as a viewer, and examine the power relations that emerge in the gaze. In her lectures and in her film Brainwashed: Sex-Power-Camera, Nina Menkes speaks of a continuous "male gaze" in the larger cinema productions of the Western world and thus brings the production conditions to our tableaux. Also in the How to - Guide literature on cinematic recording technology, a variety of sexist depictions are cited as examples that mark a power imbalance and inequality between the sexes in the sense of male gaze. See also Re-Reading Cine- & Photoguides. Based on the joint analyses, you´re asked to produce short films during the semester to explore alternatives of cinematic storytelling depicting human bodies.
