2025S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S02800
Description
The seminar "Produktionstechnik für Bühnenraum" (Production Technique for Stage/Perfomance Spaces) offers a framework for exploring strategies of experimental space production at the intersection of various artistic and theoretical disciplines. The seminar focuses on scenography's space-forming and discursive potential as a methodological apparatus, also beyond traditional theatre institutions, to negotiate contemporary social and environmental challenges.
In the summer semester 2025, the seminar will engage with the productive potential of errors, disruptions, mistakes, noise, and other non-conforming phenomena. Under the working title "NICE ERROR" – a direct reference to the product heading of the fashion label thinking MU – this potential is transferred to space-generating processes.
During the seven workshop units, alongside multidisciplinary examples of "nice errors," project-based individual and group work will be conducted. The theoretical foundations range from electronic music (Glitch) to Feminist Studies (Legacy Russell's "Glitch Feminism") and pre-modern history of science (the Clinamen of ancient atomists) to information theory (Michel Serres' "The Parasite"). In the practice-based approach to the topic, students will develop and experiment with their own space-generating projects.
NB: There are three courses offered under the title "Produktionstechnik für Bühnenraum". The lecture and practical exercise by Jakob Brossmann (course no. S03684, https://base.uni-ak.ac.at/courses/2025S/S03684/ and the associated practical exercise course no. S02708, https://base.uni-ak.ac.at/courses/2025S/S02708/) focus on the development of theatrical practice, while this seminar emphasizes strategies of experimental space production.
Both homonymous courses address historical and contemporary approaches to performance space independently yet in a complementary manner.
