The aim is to further develop their own artistic practice using newly developed methods of analysis and research. Students create visual vignettes: analog and digital “microformats” such as sketches and scribbles, short moving images, bits & pixels, memes, gifs, stories, audios.

The course focuses on our approach to visuality, a multi-perspective examination of the visual. Whose gaze is directed at what? For what purpose, in what way, mediated by which media?

Our observations focus on case studies from the real world, from our shared everyday culture to the operating system of art: visual documents, artifacts, artistic production and display. We also take into account those images that are familiar to us from the internet, television, advertising and games and that accompany our own everyday lives and thus help to shape identities - formats such as memes, gifs, reels or various social platforms.

These transcultural and transmedia images are analyzed on the basis of fundamental methodological approaches. The main aim is to “read” the respective thematic representations from the image and to develop a critical “close looking” together. We draw our methodological tools from visual studies, cultural landscape studies, gender studies and postcolonial theory. We discuss the concept of sovereignty in dealing with visual material, in reception as well as in creation.

The seminar can be assigned to the "Grundlagen bildnerischen Arbeitens".

Teaching excursions and joint exercises in cooperation with TransArts lecturers are planned.
