Contemporary Debates on Transformation
Gerald Nestler
Art x Science School for Transformation, Art x Science School for Transformation
2024W, scientific seminar (SEW), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05456
Description
The seminar introduces theoretical, methodological and practical frameworks for engaging with processes of transformation. The goal of the seminar is twofold: one the one hand, to unpack and critically reflect on core ideologies and assumptions that shape contemporary discourses of transformation; and on the other, to make room for other imaginaries based on existing inter-, trans- and post-disciplinary research.
The seminar is designed to be interactive and will prioritize discussion. It will be conducted in 4 blocks, with each block spanning 2 days and focusing on specific modes of transformation. All participants are expected to have read and critically reflected on the material, and to actively participate in discussions with their peers.
To support individual research, each participant will take a leading role once during the semester. This will involve presenting the key arguments of selected material and preparing 2 or 3 questions to lead the class discussion afterwards. Please choose at least three texts or other material for your response from the mandatory list (please see syllabus).
For blocks 3 and 4, candidates are invited to present material relevant for their thesis which hasn’t been dealt with in the course (you can, of course, also refer to such material in your response). The focus of the discussion is whether the material presented is fruitful for other PhD projects as well.
Examination Modalities
Assessment: Mandatory response and presentation (60%). Participation in the discussions and the level of mandatory literature preparation (40%). 80% attendance required.
