2024W, artistic Seminar (SEK), 4.0 ECTS, 4.0 semester hours, course number S05407
Description
This seminar asks students to engage deeply with the concept of encoding information, not just as a technical process but as an artistic endeavor. Together we will explore various systems of encoding information. This exploration includes understanding the logic and beauty of different counting base systems, the visual language of semaphore flags, the patterned rhythms of Morse code, and the tactile depth of Braille, among other systems of encoding to be decided. Each of these systems offers a unique lens through which students can view and understand the transmission of information. We will also spend time considering how cultural contexts influence these encoding methods. Students will be encouraged to critically examine how symbols and codes are more than just means of communication; they are also carriers of cultural narratives and personal expression. This examination will lead to practical exercises where students will experiment with these encoding systems, applying them in creative ways to develop individual or group exercises.
