Beschreibung

What stories move Istanbul? What and who is present in today's Istanbul, and what remains invisible? In the course, we will jointly examine queer-feminist, migrant, and decolonial stories and strategies of Istanbul and their relationships to the art and culture scene. Whose stories are included and who is excluded? What is the relationship between local stories and art production and practice?

Storytelling is a powerful method for reflecting on past experiences through oral transmission. It allows us to collect, preserve, and interpret the individual voices of past events and memories. Through storytelling, we establish a dynamic relationship between the past and the present. It also prompts us to consider who has the right to tell whose story and which stories are visible or remain hidden. This technique enables us to gather individual voices connected to past events and reconstruct them in the present. In this course, we will delve into storytelling as a key component of the qualitative research method and jointly develop an artistic, scientific, and interdisciplinary research design through writing and other exercises to understand the multifaceted stories of Istanbul.

This course is a hands-on exploration of storytelling's potential as an artistic tool and a means of knowledge production. We will have an excursion to Istanbul from December 4-8, 2024, where we will meet practitioners in the field. Through visual and performative practices, collaborative projects, practical exercises, and theoretical discussions, the course invites students to gain a comprehensive understanding of different artistic and scientific methods and visual cultures to create stories and develop ideas or deepen existing projects.
