Textiles in public space

Textiles are often overlooked as significant contributors to the creation and transformation
 of space. They divide, filter, choreograph, connect, enable various situations–transforming
 architectural spaces by adding layers of meaning and functionality. As temporary
structures or separate elements, they change the way a space is perceived and used,
 influencing how we interact with our environment and each other.


In this seminar, we will explore the interplay between textiles, architecture, and social
 interaction through the lens of art-based research. Our exploration is centered around
 contemporary artists and practitioners who incorporate textiles as either method or subject.
 The seminar includes public lectures and workshops with visiting artists, where we
 will collaboratively formulate questions.


The first artist is Hana Miletić, who translates temporary repairs to buildings and
objects observed in city streets into woven fabric. Her work raises questions about the 
care of public spaces and the gendered notions associated with such work. Following
 her is Céline Condorelli, whose practice spans both art and architecture, often centering
 on what she terms support structures, offering a critical framework that shifts focus
 from objects to relationships and their context.

Participants will be asked to either formulate their own research interest, individually or in groups, - or -  conduct an interview with an artist or researcher.

The seminar will be conducted in English and German.
