Enzyklopädie der Medien

Valerie Messini
Institute of Fine Arts and Media Art, Media Theory
2024W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05273

Description

From antiquity to the present day, recording, storing, and transmitting information have continually evolved and significantly influenced our culture. With a six-volume selection of his writings, Peter Weibel offers an encyclopedia that encompasses all facets of the media world. His reflections, particularly those on media-centered spatial perception, provide important foundations for a media-theoretical and media-scientific understanding of space and art and hold great potential. Given the rapid development of media technology, it is important to interpret Weibel's writings in new contexts and update/adapt/rethink them for both the current media landscape and future challenges and opportunities.

In an artistic-discursive format, we will critically engage with this collection. The results will be part of the Peter Weibel exhibition organized by the institute in 2025.

  • Volume 1 covers the entire spectrum of architecture under the conditions of new media. Link
  • Volume 2 is dedicated to the media innovations in the field of music. Link
  • Volume 3 addresses the influence of new media on art. Link
  • Volume 4 focuses on literature. Link
  • Volume 5 examines the influence of media on politics. Link
  • Volume 6 considers theory in the context of new media. Link

Examination Modalities

Participation: 20%
Regular attendance and active participation in group discussions are required.

Presentation: 30%
Each participant, individually or in groups, must choose a chapter from any of the six books and give a 15-minute presentation on the core concepts presented by Peter Weibel. The presentation should include a critical analysis from a current point of view, highlighting potential future developments and an idea for the exhibition contribution.

Peer Review: 20%
Each participant must provide constructive feedback on one other presentation. This will help you engage more deeply with one more of Weibel’s topics and practice constructive reviewing skills. Your peer review can be informal but should be a friendly and constructive critique of A and/or B, with a length of 500–1,000 words (or 20 min conversation). We will draw lots tomorrow to assign topics.

Presentation Documentation (A,B,C): 30%
A: Visual Presentation
Given the strong visual and conceptual quality of your work, I plan to exhibit the PDFs (or possibly videos, in some cases) of your presentations in an appropriate format (details to be determined).
B: Written Presentation
Provide your presentation in written form, with a length of 1,000 to 2,500 words. As this seminar will be repeated in the future, I intend to compile these texts into a collection, which may eventually be published as a book—an encyclopedia inspired by Weibel's encyclopedia.
C: Reworked Weibel Text
Transform the original Weibel text into a question-and-answer format. Break the text into paragraphs (answers) and formulate the corresponding questions.

Deadlines:
A, B, and C: January 15th
Peer Review: January 31st
Reworked A and/or B: February 28th

The exhibition contribution is excluded from the assessment.
This allows for an extended deadline, giving you more time to develop and refine your ideas, ensuring that the contributions stem from genuine enthusiasm, excitement, and a sense of eagerness. A separate meeting will be organized for those interested in contributing to the exhibition (date to be announced).
