Description

The camera was used as an imperialist tool from the beginnings on-

there is an urgent need to unlearn some of the implemented knowledge, parameters and language concerning it´s history. That goes from the politics of who is beeing shown and in which context, how history is written by doing so, to how the image of the normative body has been constantly reconstructed through it.

Why do we still shoot/capture/take?

How can we look at something or somebody non-violently?

What about the relational aspects between the person infront and behind the camera?

This course is an attempt to rewrite an alternative draft to the hegemonic history of (applied) image production, to deconstruct the prevailing hierarchies within the medium and to confront our role as its producers. From the action of exposing light on photosensitive compounds to born-digital works we continue to explore critically how deeply images shape our view of the world. By means of researching and discussing relevant positions, (moving) images that were left out of the canon, by taking a close look at new and old formats, displays and methods in non-linear ways and trying to establish references to our own work, we will reshape our perception of the past and make way for new narratives in which more people are welcome.
