Maria Bremer
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2024W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05207

Description

This lecture provides an introduction to modern art (1800–1950), focusing on European developments within a global context. It discerns the aesthetic transformations of this period, examining their theoretical and institutional foundations while intertwining them with social, historical, and political circumstances ranging from imperialism and colonialism to scientific advancements, urbanization, gender relations, and the repercussions of war, migration, and exile.

Each session will concentrate on a specific theme, exploring it through exemplary case studies from the period. Subjects include pivotal moments in museum, exhibition, and institutional history, the myth of the artist and the gendering of creativity, intersections of race, class, and gender in neoclassicism, as well as of art and science in romanticism. Additionally, topics encompass the (pre-)history of abstraction, processes of appropriation and othering (orientalism, japonisme, primitivism), the emergence of photography and film, connections between avant-garde movements and applied arts (constructivism, productivism, Bauhaus), global futurisms, the Harlem Renaissance, and the impact of migration on artistic practices.

Moreover, the course provides a comparative analysis of historiographical approaches to the modern period, examining concepts such as contact, multiplicity, transnationalism, transculturalism, and entanglement, which expand and challenge traditional narratives of European art history. Eventually, a guest lecture will focus on modern art in Eastern Europe in critical engagement with center-periphery models.
