Description
How do we read an image or picture words in text? In this course, we will analyze and discuss text-image relationships with an emphasis on cultural studies and media literacy approaches.
From Cubism and Dada to Facebook and Instagram, we will explore ways to critically approach and contextualize image-text relationships in art, propaganda, marketing, and social media. The aim of the course is to reflect on the different types of image-text and text-image relationships that have provoked a variety of responses at different levels of experience. Ethical questions to be addressed include: Can we design a workable model to engage diversity and promote accountability in social and political perspectives? Is it necessary to develop creative strategies to debunk fake news or expose anti-democratic, racist and sexist messages on social media?
