Description

Mapping Ways of Reading

Our practices of reading are inconceivable without a basic hand-eye coordination. In the case of the book, readers do not decode text word by word, but present it to themselves page by page. Beyond the cognitive deciphering of writing, the topography of reading aims at mapping the terrain of visual culture in which knowledge is made available for autonomous appropriation through readers.

The form of the book is challenged today by possibilities opened up by digital output devices and generative language programs. By means of AI, anyone can read and summarize immense amounts of text. A game-scientific heuristic arranges the common handling of text - in books or on screens - in such a way that it becomes understandable how knowledge can emerge.

Examination Modalities

n the first session, we will decide on a book, we aim to read together closely and discuss critically.

More Literature will be discussed in the first meeting, such as:

- Hayles, N. Katherine (2020): Postprint: books and becoming computational. New York: Columbia University Press.
- Mathieu, Marc-Antoine (2015): Richtung. Berlin: Reprodukt.
- Mendelsund, Peter (2014): What we see when we read. A phenomenology, New York: Vintage Books.
- Bolter, David and Richard Grusin (2001): Remediation. Understandig New Media, Cambridge: MIT Press
- Fickers, Andreas & Frédéric Clavert (2021): On pyramids, prisms, and scalable reading. Journal of Digital history. DeGruyter.
