FASHION AND TEXTILES III
From the French Revolution to the First World War
How have different identities dressed since the French Revolution? Where did the textile raw materials come from and how were they traded? What do we know about dress codes since the beginning of the bourgeois era and how and where do they live on today? These and other questions relating to the material cultural history of textiles and clothing will be explored in this lecture using selected visual sources and other media. The following aspects are of particular interest and form the focus of the lecture:
- Basic knowledge of the history and functions of clothing of the sexes
- Development of the production conditions of textiles and clothing
- Conveying the world and human image of the time periods
- Fashion and communication; rituals, gestures and dress languages
- History of economic and distribution processes, technical inventions
- The third dimension in clothing
- 1800 - a European threshold age and its consequences
- Patterns of fashion

Requirements
Students must take a written exam after the end of the lecture dates. There are 3 examination dates. The exam consists of open questions. The exam can also be answered in English.
Students are not required to attend the lectures, but are recommended to do so
The grade is only made up of the results of the written exam. In the event of a negative result, this can be repeated up to 3 times.
Handwritten notes and drawings are welcome during the lecture. Students are also allowed to use their laptops. There is a picture script for each lecture. Questions and comments on the topic may be asked at any time.
Basic and advanced literature should be read in addition to the lectures (literature handout no. 22 in the library).
Aims
Students will gain an overview of the history of fashion and aspects of textile history. They will be able to recognise fashionable silhouettes and classify them historically and socially. They will be able to critically assess the fashion system of the present based on their knowledge of history.
