Description

Sharing Water — Art & Science of Water

September, 2024: The disastrous weather phenomenon that has just raged over Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and the Adriatic Mediterranean has not only turned entire regions into a disaster zone. It has also flooded my so far well-ordered idea of the course of this semester, which will be dedicated to the topic of water. Is the planned “playful approach” still adequate for dealing with this existential element of nature, given that it is currently revealing its apocalyptic power? I say yes! It is more relevant than ever to engage with the element of water theoretically, practically, playfully, experimentally and artistically! In addition to research and an exploratory approach in order to understand systemic conditions and personal options for action, the focus is on the following questions: How does water affect me? How do I deal with it? What is the role of art for us as a society that is confronted with the possibilities and limits of its own strength and the resulting consequences?

The semester program:
SHARING WATER — The Game

The basis for this semester will be a water knowledge game where science and art go on a joint dive to explore, understand, and love the great flow of water around our planet.

In this course, experimental game sessions will take place at the Angewandte and also outside the university. The task of the course participants will be to research interesting and important knowledge on the topic of water on their own or together with cooperating scientists and to develop artistic and challenging ideas for immersive communication.

External cooperation partner (co-teaching) and SHARING WATER project manager: Regina Hügli, One Body of Water
Photographer, artist and water activist, navigates between art, science, politics and the public and is committed to a sustainable and fair use of water. She is the initiator of the tinterdisciplinary project SHARING WATER, which has a particularly investigative and activist approach. The project is closely networked with scientific and artistic partners as well as museums and other educational organizations.
