Number of participants: max. 10 p. // no previous knowledge necessary
In WS 2024/ 2025 (and SS 2025), the seminar and workshop will focus in particular on topics of the EU project "SPACEX - Spatial Practices in Art and Architecture for Empathetic Exchange" (https://www.spacex-rise.org/), in which the Angewandte (under the direction of Barbara Holub) is a partner.
In October 2025, a "Townhall Event" will take place at the Angewandte Innovation Lab as a final event of SPACEX, which we will prepare in the summer semester as part of the seminar and workshops.
Special guest + collaborations with:
Susanne Prinz (Director of the Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz/ Berlin):
Susanne Prinz, as curator and partner of SPACEX, will lead the workshop together with Barbara Holub as part of her residency at Angewandte.
Lucie Strecker (Angewandte Performance Lab):
The course will take place in cooperation with Lucie Strecker and her students, who will give an input on Oct.16. (before the workshop) and on Dec.11 on breathing, listening, voices.
The course teaches and discusses key artistic positions and practices from the 1960s to the present day (from Allan Kaprow, Situationists, Suzanne Lacy to Alexandra Pirici), whose innovative interventionist and performative practices are of major importance for current art production.
What is an artistic intervention?
What does "participation" mean?
_What does context mean?
How do artistic practices that engage in social criticism relate to "artistic autonomy"?
What framework conditions determine socially engaged artistic projects and how can they intervene in social processes?
We will focus specifically on the topic of "empathetic exchange" - also in preparation for the SPACEX "townhall event". We will discuss the following questions:
_With whom do I want/can I exchange?
Am I as an artist "obliged" to talk to everyone?
How does "empathetic exchange" relate to artistic "care" work?
In "Amor Mundi", Hannah Arendt states that "there is a difference between solidarity, which means the acceptance of differences and the welcoming of plurality, and empathy and equality, which attempt to flatten and condense". (see text by Samantha Rose Hill "What does it mean to love the world? Hannah Arendt and Amor Mundi" : https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/transformation/what-does-it-mean-to-love-world-hannah-arendt-and-amor-mundi [09.07.2024].)
Active participation in the seminar and the workshop:
_Discussion on "empathetic exchange"
_Conceiving and testing of small interventions/exercises in Vienna
_Drawings and sketches on artistic-urban intervention
_Documentation of the project
The skills are taught in the course.
_Concluding discussion + presentation:
The students will show the interventions of the workshop as well as their contributions to "empathetic exchange" in the final presentation in VOZ 7.
