Sinneswandel - A Hackers Guide to Perception

Science Visualization Lab
2024S, Vorlesung und Übungen (VU), 1.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S05150

Description

What we do not perceive, we cannot truly understand. Therefore, it is important to sharpen our senses and also expand them with technical aids to be able to interact adequately with a complex and dynamic environment. Our senses help our brain to perceive things, especially because they harmonize together. Left on their own, a single sense can easily deceive us. Through the interplay of the senses, however, the brain can process impressions and combine them with previously gathered experiences. Within the course, students playfully learn methods and practices in workshops to sharpen and expand their senses. As a result, they can perceive their environment more precisely and comprehensively, finding solutions to the challenges of our time.

Guest lecturers/Workshop facilitators: Margit BuschDr. Paul Divjak, Sebastijan Geč, Dr. Jeanette Müller, Dr. Stefan Resch.

Only in combination with Michael Bachhofer (Sinneswandel - A Hackers Guide to Perception) - same time, same place https://base.uni-ak.ac.at/courses/2024S/S05145/

The workshops include the following topics:
* Acoustic: we "hack" an external microphone for phones to make electromagnetic waves audible
* Visual: we visualize scientific data and make the invisible visible using auto fluorescence or a microscope
* Gustatory: through spoon dishes, we learn more about our sense of taste
* Tactile: through touch box installations, we visualize our sense of touch; ecosystems are described and linked based on sensory impressions
* Olfactory: through smell boxes, we recognize scents; the aim is to find a language for perception and develop a vocabulary
* Sensing within the body: we move on the catwalk and get to know ourselves through performance in our own bodies (empowerment)
* Perception of state spaces: here, we explore the abstract spaces of digital technology and systemic thinking

More information about the content of the workshops and the lecturers can be found at the bottom of the page: https://www.scivizlab.com/sinneswandel

Examination Modalities

* short homework assignments that will be discussed together at the next appointment
* final exhibition (students create an artistic project in reflection of the course in the medium of their choice)

Comments

The final exhibition takes place as part of the Angewandte Festival at the end of the semester. After that, the exhibition is planned to be displayed in June and August at offCave, the exhibition space of OpenCave in the 22nd district.

All courses will be on Tuesdays from 3pm to 6pm.
