2024S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05149

Description

Whenever European philosophy has dealt with the body at all, it has mostly remained on the surface. Thus even the phenomenology of the lived body, for example in Merleau-Ponty's work, remains on the surface of the skin where the imperceptible coincides with organ of perception. In this seminar, we want to look at the opaque depths of the body, which we only perceive diffusely and can hardly consciously access: the internal organs, the intestines and the brain.

In feminist and queer theory, but also in popular literature, the depths of the body have increasingly become the focus of interest. The depths of our bodies confront us with a paradox: although we are dealing with our innermost parts, which shape our mood, thinking and perception, they are often only accessible through illness, scientific models, surgical interventions or observation of others. Indeed, what is deepest within us can seem unfamiliar, disturbing, strange or even threatening. Our innermost being is not our own.

Although the inside of the body often eludes the subject's perception and access, this does not mean that it is not closely related to the psychic unconscious and to the symbolic and social orders in which we live as well as the anonymous, abstract power structures that come with them. The silent compulsion of capitalism is in the shoulders, the expectations of parents lead a life of their own in the lungs, the symbolic gender is intergrown with hormones and organs. What is abstracted from our view mingles with the forms of abstract power structures of society. Two forms of anonymity, which structure our world from within and from without, intertwine here in our shadow, as it were: The anonymity of social orders, which are too large and distant for our sphere of perception and action, and the anonymity of the deeper layers of organs, which are too small and too close for us.

In our seminar, we want to focus on this strange intermediate zone in which the anonymity of the body communicates with the anonymity of society. In addition to Elizabeth Wilson (Gut Feminism), Catherine Malabou (What to do with our brain?) we will also read phenomenological authors (Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Drew Leder) and psychoanalytical texts on psychosomatics (Eckart Leiser).

Comments

Being aware that a block seminar may collide with other appointments, I allow the greatest possible tolerance with regard to absences. High absences can be compensated for, for example, with independent compensational work.
