Duchamp All Ways: the Philosophical Reception of the Readymade
Without Duchamp’s readymade there would be no Contemporary Art. This seminal moment turned artistic creation into a conceptual act, one no longer confined to the traditional materials and topics of fine art, but able to engage with the entire world of non-art. Duchamp’s dead-pan humour placed the artist’s wit at the centre of their practice, a poetic approach that privileged the ‘grey matter’ of the artist, while often examining the ambiguities of desire and sex. This course will trace the history of the readymade’s philosophical afterlife, as it animates theoretical arguments and artistic developments. Our itinerary will include Duchamp’s differing receptions in the US and in France, his role in the emergence of Conceptual Art, his interpretation by philosophers such as Jean-Francois Lyotard, Felix Guattari, Thierry de Duve, Eric Alliez and Mauricio Lazzarato, and his influence on discussions of gender and labour theory, as well as his role in subsequent artistic movements such as Pop art, Relational Aesthetics and Participatory practices.

Students will be expected to follow the readings provided, and write a short engagement with one of them, as well as a longer essay dealing with a theme of the course. Essays can be written in English or German.
