2024S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05111

Description

Considering communications networks in the context of art and activism reveals a number of creative and critical approaches to working with radio and computer networking technology. Computer networking as situated within culture and society is a rich subject area to explore - from political implications (are protocols political / access to data networks / ownership of data and infrastructure) to thinking of networks from a purely materialistic point of view.

In this seminar workshop, we will experiment with the electromagnetic spectrum, considering network and network infrastructure as artistic material. Can we build an antenna from a tree, a network from slime mould traces, transmit information through water? Before jumping into these more experimental activities, we will start with an introduction for total beginners to the software tools needed for developing our own net-based projects.

Additionally, we will review past and contemporary network-based art, from early net.art to hacktivist to modern post-internet works. We will speculate on the concept of networks as both a place and a material for artistic exploration and experimentation.

Examination Modalities

Attendance and the development of a network-based project is required for successful completion of the seminar. It is also possible to develop a project using physical materials (paint, wood, other sculptural materials) that interfaces with the digital component of your project. You may also continue a project started in a previous semester or in tandem with another course.

It is greatly encouraged to develop your project idea out of your own practice and interests.

Comments

This class will be taught using the command line in our computer terminals as our workspace. No prior experience in the command line is required to successfully complete the seminar. All technical concepts, tools, and approaches will be explained and demonstrated from a beginner's level. This can be adjusted on a one-to-one basis for more technologically advanced students.
