Fakenews & Media Manipulation

2024S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 1.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S05099

Description

The term "fake" gained an enormous presence in news reports concerning the often hair-raising statements by former US President Donald Trump (2017-21). The term also experienced a boom during the coronavirus pandemic as a fighting word against fact-based interpretations of the so-called real.

With industrial messaging platforms for chatbots designed to influence election campaigns or destabilize official politics, instruments have been established to transform democratic public spheres into a hall of mirrors of fakes.

In contemporary art and music, the term "fake" initially had a positive meaning as a stylistic aesthetic moment. Fake was creative imitation. Current digital production methods - especially with AI - create new potential to unhinge the real with deep fakes. The unstable terrain on which fake news and fake as an artistic strategy meet will be examined together in this seminar.
