Description
The relationship between art and sexuality is complex and, from most art theoretical and historical perspectives, conflicted. Sensuality obstructs the specific sensibility of art; artistic intellectuality and competence are best proved in contrast to “obscenity”, “prostitution”, pornography and, ideally, in well-measured distance from the pleasure principle. The seminar is dedicated to two main topics: For one, to sexuality as a topic in art, and the way depictions of sexuality are shaped by specific taboos, restrictions and transgressions. We will look at artworks from Baroque/Rococo, Romanticism and Surrealism to contemporary art. A second topic is the difficult relationship between art and sensuality, which touches upon many topics, including the conflict-ridden debate about sexuality, gender difference and pornography since the 1960s and 1970s, sex positivity in queer art, artistic sex education, the relationship between physical pleasure and aesthetics, and art as a metaphor for and sublimation of sexuality.
Examination Modalities
Verpflichtend für den Abschluss sind:
- regelmäßige Teilnahme (80%),
- aktive Mitarbeit, mit Übernahme von Lese- und Diskussionsbeiträgen, sowie
- schriftliche Arbeit zu einem Thema aus dem Seminar.

Achtung: das Seminar findet in Form von Einzel- und Doppelsitzungen (bis 17:00) statt.
Das Seminar kann auch als BA-Seminar (Studienfach Lehramt) belegt werden.
Comments
Die Teilnehmer:innenzahl ist auf 30 Personen beschränkt. Neben der Registrierung in der Base ist auch die Anwesenheit bei der Vorbesprechung verpflichtend. Die Registrierung erlaubt zudem den Zugang zum Nextcloud Folder mit Texten, Materialien und Informationen.
