Beschreibung
Structured in thematic chapters, this introductory lecture discusses artistic practices and their critical vocabulary (historiographies, theories, discourses) from the 1950s to the recent present. This will include a critical examination of the criteria suitable to characterizing and periodizing artistic works as “contemporary art” and of the geopolitical and art-related categories of “global” contemporaneity. Artistic practices are presented in relation to their historical, socio-political and institutional contexts, while considering discontinuities and breaks in the historiography of contemporary art.
The individual chapters focus on the discussion of a wide range of artworks and art projects, including topics such as: materiality, intermediality and conceptuality; transculturality and globalization; individuality and collectivity; audience and participation; technology and body politics; art and ecology; art, politics and ethics.
Prüfungsmodalitäten
Written exam, to be completed optionally in English and German. Three exam dates are offered at the end of June and at the beginning and end of October 2024. After that, no more exam dates will be offered, as the lecture changes every year.
Anmerkungen
This course is taught in ENGLISH. All introductory courses in Art History (Kunstgeschichte 1-4) are held alternately in German and English, with the German course "Globale Gegenwartskunst / Kunstgeschichte 4" following in spring 2025.
The lecture is accompanied by a tutorial course led by Paula Netzl, offering support for any issues or question you might have regarding the lecture or on how to prepare for the exam. Sessions to discuss specific topics, artworks and/or texts will be organized. Contact Paula at paula.netzl@uni-ak.ac.at.
A reference collection with books and texts on the course is set up in the library. A detailed bibliography is stored online in Nextcloud, as well as many texts and other materials for the course. The image scripts are uploaded weekly online as well. Registation to the course will activate the access to the Nextcloudfolder.
