Zeichnen: Digital und Analog

Simon Goritschnig
Institute of Fine Arts and Media Art, Drawing and Printmaking
2024S, Projektarbeit (PA), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04973

Description

What is drawing in the digital age - and what can it do? And how can we expand its boundaries?

These questions and their relevance will be discussed in the context of contemporary art and examined practically and intuitively. Building on a media-theoretical discussion of current developments in image production, drawing as an artistic medium will be explored and expanded through experimental work. We will discuss the influence of A.I. and digital tools on fine arts, as well as  the reasons to use them.

During the course, digital and analogue tools are tested and discussed, while new ways of creating drawings are explored. The course teaches basic practical skills in the use of computer-aided drawing, 3D printing and pen plotters. We will also experiment with various analogue drawing techniques. These impressions will be used to develop an individual artistic work based on one (or more) of the techniques discussed.

The course is a mixture of theory, discussion and practical learning. The artistic results - whether digital and/or analogue - will be discussed in the group at the end of the project and presented in a group exhibition.

Who is the course suitable for?
+ Anyone who is interested in drawing. (But you don't have to be good at drawing).
+ Beginner level in digital work (there is an introduction)
+ Advanced level in digital work (there is the opportunity to focus and deal with questions)
+ Anyone who likes to experiment and is looking for new ways of working
+ Interest in technology and content discussion
