Ways of Seeing; Photography and measure

This Project Work class is about photography in science and in art. It builds on the investigation of the relationship between photography and measure that started in the Winter Semester 23/24. You will use photography to develop a project that comments on methods of measurement in natural science, which will be presented publicly in an exhibition at the end of the Semester.

The technical emphasis of the class is put on analogue photography, in collaboration with the Analogue Photography Workshop (Lisa Rastl and Claudia Rohrauer). You will have dedicated time for shooting with an analogue camera and an introduction workshop to black and white film processing and printing.

To support you, the class introduces uses of photography in scientific context and their echo and influence on artistic photography. It brings in a close observation of photographic works to understand the strategies employed in artworks related to natural science. 

No initial knowledge of photography is required, but curiosity and the wish to experiment are most welcome.

The grading is based on the active development of a project along the Semester. This will be measured through:

• Presentation of your project at different stages
• Regular photographic assignments, whose outcomes will be shared and discussed collectively during class.
• Final project (can be conducted in a group) and its presentation
• Project documentation
• Regular attendance and active participation in class

The Syllabus will be distributed in the first class. Any changes regarding the class and occuring during the Semester will be communicated per e-mail through Base.

This class is primarily for students of the Cross-Disciplinary-Strategies Department and is limited to fourteen students. Students from other departments are welcome provided the maximum amount of registrations hasn't been reached.
