Translation as Praxis. Dialectical Literacy across Media

Viktoria Luisa Metschl
Art Sciences and Art Education, Transcultural Studies
2024S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04914

Description

“As soon as I speak, I am betrayed by the situation, I am betrayed by the person who is listening to me, simply as a function of communication. I am betrayed by the choice of my words. When I speak to myself alone, I'm not aware of myself. I don't have the time. It's not worth it for me to tell myself tales, and I'm too old really to lie to myself.” (Jean Genet)

In light of Genet’s words, what do we do with the myth of a “faithful” or even “literal” translation? How do we retrieve, develop, reassemble, invent and sharpen a vocabulary for translation work that remains faithful to the authors poetic / political stance while opening it up for circulation and connection, complicity and new complexities, a vocabulary that does not tell but expose lies (A. Cabral) even if this implies a necessary betrayal of certain aspects of one’s own language since its linguistics might often be found to be fundamentally intertwined with the power structure of those very lies and myths?

Grounded in concrete examples and tasks of translation work within their specific contexts, the seminar engages with various types and techniques of translation as means within an arsenal of intellectual weapons. Together, we will question, perhaps dismiss, and practice vocabularies in the field of linguistic, visual, sonic and material processes of translation to deepen and broaden our consciousness for political readings, learning and un-learning.

To begin with, we will lay a base of dialectical criticism to free a ground from which one can be invested into different “languages”, their environments and struggles to discern what is at stake when setting out for a translation process without overwriting, erasing or downplaying the role of power, violence, resistance (even to translation) and difference in the structure and materiality of all kinds of media texts.

From there, we will venture out into the praxis of organizing and thinking through translation, hailing from the concept of the “littérature du relais” in light of the Algerian revolution, to the relationship between poetics and politics, the broader importance to what Jean Genet and Walter Rodney say about translation and betrayal, and finally the cinematographic and cross-media magnificence of translating between seeing, hearing, feeling, describing and remembering in Haile Gerima’s work Adwa. An African Victory (1999).

The structure of the course will alter between exercises and analysis of translation, interventions from and discussions with invited guests, listening sessions, and film screenings.

Examination Modalities

60% participation in discussion, the collectively developed glossary, reading and reading groups

40% final seminar "paper" (essay, translation work, artistic project) - the knowledge of discussed literature and materials must be demonstrated in all formats

Comments

The main spoken languages of the course will be English and German while remaining open to multiple other languages, including those that we all might not speak yet but will have to develop together and learn from each other.

Translation cannot exist as praxis without careful and generous listening.
