From Institution to Infrastructure

Marina Vishmidt
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art Theory
2024S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04874

Description

This seminar proposes to look at the constitution of contemporary socio-ecological crisis through the lens of infrastructure, which is to say the social materiality of technology as a condition of possibility, from processes of extraction to processes of revolutionary change. Such an inquiry also needs to consider the role of condtions of impossibiity, such as the blocking or yet symbolic destruction deployed by climate movements, as well as the 'blocked' politics that stand in the way of the changes required. Thus the seminar will emphasise the centrality of technology as both a material force and a 'real abstraction' in the political genealogy of the present, including the increasing  role of the capitalisation of social imagination represented by AI as it re-codes all kinds of infrastructures, from production to policing. At the same time, it is key to look at infrastructure as part of critical political thought, including emerging and older debates on planning and engineering as aspects of communist strategy and future social reproduction.

While this course will be drawing on my recent work on the shift from institution to infrastructure as the key referent in art-theoretical critique, this will be a point we will arrive at rather than be departing from, once we have understood what could be meant by 'infrastructure' in light of the terms set out above.
