Analytical storytelling in the age of "intelligent" machines:

Borges, Barthes, Black Mirror and AI filmmaking

This year, the seminar is centred around storytelling using a new technology: AI film.

The seminar operates with an expanded concept of the Anthropocene where the man-made age has not only climatic and geological dimensions. The seminar will bring into view different aspects each year. In continuation of last year's seminar "AI, Algorithms and Art" - the results were presented in the form of the "KI Salon" at the Angewandte Festival and found expression in the AI film "The AI Controversy" ( - this year's focus will be on intelligent machines and how we (can) tell stories about them, using a new technology: AI film. The concept of analytical storytelling refers to stories with a strong story premise which leads to certain consequences and aims at generating new insights.

Analytical narratives in our sense are the Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges, but also certain episodes of the English TV series Black Mirror.

After an introduction to some basic features of the A.I. revolution, we will look at storytelling and its critique in order to answer the question which stories we want to tell and how. As the focus of the semester project, participants will realise an analytical narrative in the medium of their choice.
