Eine transhistorische Reise. Geschichtliche Revisionen in der Gegenwartskunst

2024S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04743

Description

How does revisiting the past change our view of the present is the central question of this seminar. In contemporary art, but also in exhibitions, transhistorical bridges are built that connect the present with the past, reactivating past styles, materials, themes, stories and perspectives. At the same time, however, this process is also a process of transformation, which in turn is subject to a temporal and cultural translation. When the material, narrative and socio-political cultures and issues of the past are made present, this process is subject to an examination of those historical manifestations and conditions. Through a transhistorical practice, overlooked or marginalised perspectives can become visible and at the same time we can shed new light on questions of our present with the help of history.

Based on  selected artistic works (such as those by Amitis Motevalli, Anahita Razmi, Kara Walker, Yinka Shonibare and Wangechi Mutu) and by reading theoretical texts on the subject of transhistoricity and transformation, the above-mentioned aspects will be examined on the basis of case studies.

Examination Modalities

Mandatory for the degree are:

- Regular participation (80%),
- active participation, including reading and discussion of contributions, as well as
- a written paper on a topic chosen from the seminar.

- Alternatively, students can produce an artistic work and explain it in a written text in relation to the seminar content.

The seminar can also be taken as a BA seminar ("Studienfach Lehramt").

Comments

Please note that this seminar is linked to the INTRA project Valleys of the Simorgh. A transhistorical Quest for Equality and Democracy

Therefore, part of the course is dedicated to the examination of the narrative Conference of the Birds, which was written in 1177 by the Persian poet Attar and is a source of inspiration for various artists until today. On 24 April and 25 April, students will have the opportunity to talk to Ali Kazim (miniature painter and lecturer at the art academy in Lahore/Pakistan) about his Attar revisions.

In addition, an exhibition is planned (opening on 27 June 2024 in the hinterland art space) in which not only the works of Ali Kazim, Farkhondeh Shahroudi and Ahmadjan Amini will be on display, but also the students themselves can contribute to it. This exhibition will be curated and organised together with the seminar participants, but will also enable visual arts students to contribute and exhibit their own work on this topic. At the same time, short contributions can be written about individual works and the exhibition announcement.

Please register for a presentation topic here by 13 March 2024:  https://meet.uni-ak.ac.at/etherpad/p/einetranshistorischeReise

The PowerPoint presentation shown in the first session (with all artworks and texts) can be found in the Nextcloud folder.
