Practices - Intervention / Participation II (Excursion/ Workshop in Trieste): 1.0 SemStd.
Number of participants: max. 10 p. // no previous knowledge necessary
What is an artistic intervention? What does "participation" mean? What does context mean? How do artistic practices that critically engage in societal issues relate to "artistic autonomy"? What conditions determine these projects and how can they intervene in societal processes? These questions have been re-addressed by documenta 15 (2022) and are receiving increasing attention, also in reference to "cancel culture" and current debates on artists taking on a critical political position - which we will discuss.
The course will introduce key artists, relevant examples of art projects and artistic practices since the 1960s until today (from Allan Kaprow, Situationists, Suzanne Lacy to Alexandra Pirici), whose innovative interventionist and performative practices are eminently significant and influential till today. Special attention will be given to women artists and the social context. In addition, we will discuss selected texts on socially engaged art. Interventionist and participatory practices are becoming increasingly important - especially with regard to the role art can play for societal and ecological issues. This makes it all the more important to gain a differentiated knowledge of this field.
Active participation in the course as well as in the workshop:
_Conceptualization and testing of a small intervention.
_drawings/ sketches of artistic-urban intervention, psychogeographical maps
_documentation of the project
The skills for this will be taught in the workshop
_final discussion + presentation as a small exhibition
