Design from Italy

Design Made in Italy is known for its sophistication. But what lies behind the usual market clichés? This exercise/lecture takes you on a journey of discovery into Italian design of the post-war period. The focus is on design milestones as for example by Gio Ponti and Carlo Scarpa. Political developments such as the Superstudio rebellion in the 1970s or Radical Design and Memphis will also be discussed. An overview of the history of design in Italy is created through selected stages and positions of design, which are examined and developed by the students in their contemporary context. The seminar takes place as a monthly block event in the ID I project room.

Examination Modalities

Students must give a 20-minute presentation on a predetermined topic and focus their presentation on specific drafts. At the end of the semester, a written essay on this topic must be submitted. Deadline: September 1.
