Applied Design Concepts" is an advanced architectural design seminar that examines the connection between conceptual understanding of design and form generation.
Students will revisit formal outputs derived from relevant conceptual approaches within the discipline of architecture and art. As part of the seminar, students will have opportunities to study and replicate projects/topics in architecture and art, to comprehend the conceptual approaches . Additionally, they will engage in small tasks of ideation, design, and development during class time, all of which will be complemented by the use of conceptual model making as a powerful tool for design exploration.
Conceptual model making will be introduced as a fundamental design methodology. Students will engage in creating physical and digital models that represent their architectural ideas and concepts. Through this hands-on approach, they will gain insights into the spatial qualities, proportions, and materiality of their designs.
Additionally, we will also visit architectural offices and artist to comprehend the connection between concept and realization. These excursions will provide students with the opportunity to explore projects in different stages of development and witness how architectural an other conceptional ideas are translated into practical implementation.
This exposure will contribute to a deeper understanding of the practical application of conceptual approaches in the architectural context.
The combination of studying existing concepts/projects/works, undertaking design tasks, and employing conceptual model making will enable students to strengthen their architectural knowledge and develop a deeper appreciation for the interplay between conceptual understanding, form generation, and the practical realization of their designs.
No specific project will be developed for this seminar. It is not a design studio, so the task will be adjusted consequently, and it could be compatible at the end of the semester with the studio design agenda of the student. Nevertheless there will be small independent tasks that should be done during the class time. Attendance is mandatory.
The Seminar is limited to a maximum of 15 attendees
