Description

Architecture as Representation.

For architecture, representation is simultaneously a technical, cultural and political question. From drawings through models to buildings and beyond, the semester will explore architecture as a form of media itself. Thinking of architecture as representation allows us to explore its direct relations to culture, material and ideology. And so use work to ask questions about architecture's relationship to the world around: How is it made? Who is it made for? Why is it made?

The studio will be organised around workshops, each exploring a specific subject as a technique and an idea.

These will include:

i.                     Rewiring the history of representation in architecture

ii.                   How to prompt machines into producing trans-historical visions while unravelling their remixes and reassemblies

iii.                 Translating (and mistranslating) between forms of representation to learn new languages

These workshops will be testing grounds for ideas that explore representation in architecture. Exploring how references - from the grand historical to the banal everyday – can be mobilised through alternative technologies and motives. Each a possibility for asserting an architecture in a post digital age.
