Ways of seeing; Photography: measuring instrument?

This class is about photography in science and art. It asks the question whether photography can be a measuring instrument and goes two ways to answer it. (1) It delves into the history of photography and the context of its development, in regards to the scientific and technological evolutions of the 19th Century. (2) It brings in a close observation of analogue photographic works to understand how photography can be used in relation to the perception of phenomena.

It is a Project Work class applied to a specific topic. You will be producing an application of the research that we will conduct around this question ("can photography be a measuring instrument?"), searching for a phenomenon that seems invisible to the « naked eye » and developing a photographic process to make it perceivable and measurable. This "Final project" can be conducted in a group.

The grading is based on the active development of a project along the Semester. This will be measured through:

- Active participation in class 

- Four small assignments, whose results will be shared and discussed collectively during class. 

- Final project (can be conducted in a group)

- Reflection to hand in mid-February 

The Syllabus will be distributed in the first class. Any changes regarding the class and occuring during the Semester will be communicated per e-mail through Base.

No initial knowledge of photography is required, basics of analogue photography will be introduced in the class.

This class is primarily for students of the Cross-Disciplinary-Department and is limited to twenty students. Students from other departments are welcome provided the maximum amount of registrations hasn't been reached
