Familienverhältnisse

Description

The family, according to sociologist Gisela Notz, has never existed - what does exist, however, is the ideology of familism (or familialism), the social organizational norm derived from the concept of an "ideal family." This familism, Notz argues, has shaped politics and social structure in most Western countries for several centuries. But although the family has practical (i.e., material) relevance only for part of the Western European population, and precisely not for everyone and at all times, we live under a "rule of the family" (Karl-Heinz Hillmann's dictionary of sociology) in which the family is structurally the central social instance for the social existence of the individual as well as for social cohesion. The increasing scarcity of care as a public, overall social task (care, nursing, i.e. the care and provision of people in everyday life, not only in the case of illness, old age or childhood) through capitalism has made familism even more significant (this was shown not least by the Corona pandemic). We want to confront this structure of meaning, overloading, dehistoricization with a critical examination of family and the relations connected with it. What exactly does family mean, what about alternative designs or counter-designs, how is family narrated (in films, series, novels, in our own self-narratives), and how would society be conceivable without family, or as Sophie Lewis asks in "Abolishing the Family": what could take the place of family?

The seminar will take place as a block course and in exchange with the seminar "Family. A medial de/construction" by Thomas Waitz (TFM Uni Vienna). Part of the seminar is a planned guest lecture with Sophie Lewis (tbc), a field trip to a place where family is "consumed and enacted", and a joint writing and discussion day (project workshop).
